Basketball was first played in December 1891, a physical education teacher called Dr. James Naismith was trying to find an activity which could be played inside during the winter months. He nailed a peach basket to a wall and invented the game of basketball. The first official basketball match was played at YMCA gymnasium in New York in January 1982.

The aim of the game is to throw the ball into the opponents hoop, there are five players on a team and the match is split into 4 quarters. A penalty throw is awarded when a player is fouled while attemting a shot.
